For decades, America has needed a new blueprint for teaching and learning. The old tried-and-true methods have become worn. Outmoded. Inadequate. Untrue.

Stymied by an unacceptably high and growing proportion of dropouts, manifested in distressingly high unemployment, crime and social unrest, a vocal tide of parents, politicians and business leaders realize that change must take place. To make that transformation, to improve learning, educators must unlearn many of the unquestioned precepts that have over time have corroded and immobilized the institution of American education.
